- The aim of the course is to introduce MA students to the basic concepts of Spanish phraseology, to consolidate their knowledge of phraseological units, especially collocations and idiomatic expressions, and to encourage their use and research. Prerequisite Students must have a level of Spanish equivalent to at least C1 (guest students who are not native Spanish speakers and come from institutions that do not have an IIA with the Department of Hispanic Studies at ELTE are required to present a DELE or SIELE Spanish language examination certificate). Knowledge and skills acquired or expected during the course: A) Knowledge Students know the basic methodology and theoretical problems of phraseology; are familiar with the main features of idiomatic and other phraseological units and the formal and semantic differences between the different types; are familiar with a number of frequent Spanish idioms and with their origin; are familiar with a number of articles and lexicographical works on phraseology. B) Ability Students can recognise fixed idiomatic expressions in an authentic spoken or written text, and their formal and semantic structure; can correctly use the expressions learned during the course; are able to use phraseological dictionaries and scientific studies on Spanish phraseology in a competent way. C) Attitude Students strive to acquire new knowledge and skills; aim for continuous self-education using available technologies and specialized literature, among other tools; are open and curious about the idiomatic expressions of the Spanish language and the metaphors and metonymies found in the idioms. D) Autonomy and responsibility Students are committed to autonomous, intensive learning; carry out learning tasks independently; take responsibility for their own work, progress, achievements and failures.
- Course content
- The basics of phraseology: the history, subject, methods and theoretical problems of the discipline. Basic concepts, terminological issues. Defining features of the Spanish locución: pluriverbalism, fixedness, idiomaticity, institutionalization. Semantic aspects of idioms: idiomaticity; metaphor and metonymy. Issues of phraseography; phraseological dictionaries and other publications. The relationship between phraseology and culture. Comparative phraseology. Phraseodidactics. Practical tasks also will be included (e.g. analysing and translating phrases in context and placing them in the appropriate context).
- Assessment method
- A short oral presentation (50), homework (100) and a written exam (100 points). Grading 1 to 5.
