- A detailed study of the literary trends of the Spanish Golden Age (XVI-XVII), the outstanding authors and their works.
- Course content
- An overview of the complex political and social processes of this conflict-ridden period and the specific features of Spanish Renaissance and Baroque literature, with particular attention to the changes that took place in all areas of literary life. The most important writers of the 16th century: Garcilaso de la Vega and his followers; the works of the most important Spanish mystics in world literature; the development of narrative genres (sentimental, chivalric, pastoral, the birth of picaresque literature, etc.); the beginnings of drama and theatre; the life and literary importance of Cervantes. Study of the major stylistic trends of the 17th century (culteranismo, conceptismo), the influence of the great artists of the previous century. The heyday of dramatic literature and theatre; Lope de Vega and his followers; Tirso de Molina; Pedro Calderón de la Barca and his contemporaries. Other great authors of picaresque literature, their influence on European literature, the subsequent decline of the genre. The literary work of Luis de Góngora, Francisco de Quevedo, Baltasar Gracián.
- Assessment method
- At the end of the semester, students will present their knowledge of the topics covered in the course in the form of a colloquium. Emphasis is placed on a thorough knowledge of the required works of fiction.
