- The aim of the course is to introduce students to modern cultural phenomena, activities and works specific to Spanish-speaking areas that they have not had the opportunity to learn about in other courses, but which are an integral part of Spanish-speaking culture. It is essential that they not only understand them, but are also able to examine them with a critical eye and then express their opinions. We are also particularly concerned with the extent to which the elements studied in the course can be used in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language and the dissemination of Spanish-language cultures.
- Course content
- During the course we will explore the following topics: - The history of Spanish cinema and its prominent filmmakers - Spanish cinema: history of cinema and its history, its filmmakers and their highlights (Premios Goya, Festival de Cine de San Sebastián) - The Latin American soap opera (telenovela, culebrón) - The translation of history into cinema and literature (historical series, historical novels) - The specific situation of literature today (literary prizes, the digital book, bestsellers) - Children's and young people's literature - Comic books Publishers, cultural magazines, prominent cultural institutions
- Assessment method
- Students are expected to participate actively in all classes, and are required to prepare several sessions of smaller topics (for example, presenting a Spanish film of their choice or a work of Spanish fiction), as well as larger, interactive presentations on a topic set at the beginning of the semester. Finally, they will present their knowledge acquired during the semester in a final exam. - They will be awarded a mark for all their achievements (worth a total of 150 points).
- Bibliography
- Given the nature of the lesson, we work with a range of online resources. For example, the official websites of film and literary awards, the sites of the main newspapers and cultural magazines, as well as the many documentaries and accessible series on Spanish television websites. The sources of cartoons and comics also depend on the specific subject matter chosen by the students, while the digital book and the activities of publishers and cultural institutions are always based on the most recent sources.
