- Course description Name of the course: Introduction to special needs education in Hungary Instructor: Eszter Márkus, PhD. Aims: The aim of the course is to provide exchange students with basic knowledge on the Hungarian society, on the educational system and on educational & rehabilitation services for persons with special needs. This course is obligatory for all exchange students who don’t speak Hungarian. The lectures will be held in one block of 4 weeks at the beginning of each semester. The visits will take place primarily also in this period, but some of them may be organised during the semester as well.

- Learning outcomes and competences: Participants of the course… Knowledge: Get knowledge of the basic concepts, key interrelationships and issues in special needs education. get knowledge on the principles of cooperating with people with disabilities. Understanding the importance of reflective and critical thinking. know the historical elements, basic social processes, key theories, contexts and problem-solving methods of Disability Studies and know the topics that are relevant for both Disability Studies and special needs education. Are familiar with the principles and practices of the functioning of institutional system and services for people with disabilities, the legal background of services, and they know the international guidelines and fundamental human rights related to people with disabilities. Know the national complex institutional system of assistance for people with disabilities, broken down by life stage, the inter-sectoral co-operation methods and obligations, the professional support options according to individual needs, the possible client pathways. Skills: are able to critically analyse their own activities, interpret and evaluate their views in a reflective way. can contribute competently to the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities, to navigate among the services of the complex institutional system, to consider professional support options according to individual needs. can contribute competently to the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities, to navigate among the services of the complex institutional system, to consider professional support options according to individual needs. Attitude: Commitment to empowering approaches that focus on the development of people with disabilities. Main content and topics: Topics: The aim of the course is to provide exchange students with basic knowledge on the Hungarian society, on the educational system and on educational & rehabilitation services for persons with special needs. Basic issues of Hungarian special educational support are shortly presented in general and in relation to the different areas of disabilities. Teaching and learning methods: The lectures and discussions are held by members of the academic staff of the different departments. Additionally, visits to various schools and service centres are organised so that international students could gather some practical experience.
