Oktatás célja

The course helps MA students understand how the main issues of schooling and family life are represented in films. These topics – having particular patterns of symbols – are relevant to open up more profound questions of complex cultural factors in society. While discussing some critical problems that arise from the stories, students gain the opportunity to get closer to their chosen profession and have the chance to practise how to present their own independent opinions.

Activities The 5 contact lessons will be devoted to the topics mentioned above. We watch five chosen movies from the list below, from which we talk about four and one will be chosen to write an essay on it. List of films: Anderson, Lindsay 1968: If… Cantet, Laurent 2008: The Class Dolan, Xavier 2009: Jai tue ma mere/I killed my mother Faris, Valerie and Dayton, Jonathan 2006: Little Miss Sunshine Fleck, Ryan 2006: Half Nelson Gansel, Dennis 2008: Die Welle/ The Wave Hook, Harry 1990: Lord of the Flies Markovic, Goran 1992: Tito and Me Richardson, Tony 1962: The loneliness of the long distance runner Shanley, John Patrick 2008: Doubt Truffaut, Francois 1959: Les Quatre Cents Coups/ The 400 Blows (And we are open to update the list by including other films.)

Számonkérés és értékelés

Course requirements thorough reading of relevant literature active participating in course work by compiling bibliographies, cooperating with fellow students, initiating problems, questions relevant to the course. written essay on a chosen film. Deliverables: written essay (6-8 pages), APA 7 reference style. Evaluation: Each student’s performance and essay will be discussed individually with an emphasis on strengths and weaknesses.
