- Learning outcomes
- This course combines the textile art of patchwork with cultural history with the aim of familiarizing students with a unique aspect of American culture while also discussing methods for integrating patchwork into various classes. A brief overview of the cultural significance of patchwork and quilting will be provided at the beginning of the course, followed by instruction in how to create a patchwork block out of available materials. The course therefore has three parts: the first includes reading two to three short literary works about patchwork quilts. Throughout the second part, students will explore planning and creating their own block. In the third part, students will analyze how each work could be applied to the separate disciplines of storytelling, oral history, mathematics, visual arts, or sustainability.
- Course content
- The subjects of slavery and their role in growing cotton will be connected to the topic of patchwork. Students will read works by Susan Glaspell and Alice Walker to complete the practical aspect of the course, i.e., the sewing of a patchwork block.
- Assessment method
- To complete this course students will need to 1) participate actively in class discussions about the assigned literary works, 2) design and create a chosen block 3) demonstrate how a block could be used to broaden skill sets in a school setting. Although some materials will be provided, students should also be prepared to use their own fabric scraps.
