Learning outcomes
a) Knowledge - Knowledge on the recent methods of X-ray crystallographic methods. Knowledge on the power, limitations and applications of various diffraction methods. Knowledge facilitating one to use with criticism the results of molecule structure research in solving problems related to physical or chemical characteristics of compounds. Capability of evaluating X-ra crystallographic results with criticism; and of detailed analysis of data about molecular geometry and secondary interactions. Capability of using these data in his/her own research. Capability of evaluating published crystallographic results objectively b) Abilities - Ability cooperating needed for synthetizing results of different scientific fields. Ability to apply critical approach to explore structure/characteristics relationships of the material. c) Attitude - Responsible attitude in collaborations with researchers of other fields of science, including chemical industry and technology. d) Autonomy and responsibility - Having professional knowledge, she collaborates responsibly with experts in the chemical and other scientific and technical fields.
Course content
Mathematical description of the diffraction phenomenon – Symmetries in crystallography, crystallographic symmetries – Steps of the structure determination. Basics of theory and practice of methods used in chemical crystallography and protein crystallography. – Outlook: other diffraction methods.
Assessment method
Oral exam at the end of the semester, K(5).
