- Learning outcomes
- a) Knowledge - has a knowledge of the basic qualitative and quantitative concepts and laws of electrodynamics and their application to microscopic and macroscopic systems. b) Abilities - is able to examine basic electrodynamic properties of materials, to understand and apply the mathematical apparatus and models necessary for the description of such systems. c) Attitude - based on the acquired knowledge attempts to gain deeper understanding of the electromagnetic properties of matters, the mathematical models and the underlying physical phenomena. d) Autonomy and responsibility - attempts to think critically, understands the limitations of the applied models, and thinks taking these limitations into consideration.
- Course content
- Consistent treatment of the electric (dielectric), magnetic and optical properties of the materials based on microscopic and macroscopic principles Introduction to classical electrodynamics. Electric properties: electric polarization, electric dipole moment, polarizability, relative permittivity. Magnetic properties: magnetic polarization, magnetic susceptibility, paramagnetism, magnetic resonance parameters. Optical properties: polarization, interference, diffraction, optical activity, refractive index.
- Assessment method
- The final grade is established by taking a weighted average of the results of the homework problems and an oral examination at the end of the semester.
