- a) Knowledge - She/he understands the theory of optical spectroscopic methods. She/he knows the components of spectroscopic instruments, knows the working principles, the important measurement methods. b) Abilities - She/he can choose the appropriate spectroscopic method for a practical problem. He/she know how to interpret the measurements. c) Attitude - He/she is willing to expand his/her knowledge by reading scientific publications. d) Autonomy and responsibility - Make decisions about his/her studies.
- Course content
- Introduction (History of spectroscopy, properties of light, basics of spectroscopy), Theory of vibrational spectroscopy, Chemical information in vibrational spectra, Components and operation of IR spectrometers, Raman techniques, Sample preparation and measurement methods in IR spectroscopy, Coupled (hyphenated) and special techniques GC-FTIR, HPLC-IR, IR and Raman microscopy, matrix isolation, optical activity methods (ECD, VCD, ROA), UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, Instrumentation and chemical information of UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, Principles of lasers, types of lasers, laser spectroscopy (CRDS, FM, LIF, REMPI), Photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS, ZEKE), Data processing and analysis.
- Assessment method
- Optional: 1) Participation in lectures + Presentation of a novel method/current result prepared from scientific literature + short oral exam (20 + 10 minutes); 2) Written exam (90 minutes).
