- Learning outcomes
- a) Knowledge - The aim of the course is to teach students the most important instrumental methods used in the structural investigation of organic compounds and biomolecules, including sample preparation, spectrum acquisition techniques and operation of various instruments. b) Abilities - Besides learning the basic methodology, the students are performing complex measurements which reveal the applicability and limitations of the studied analytical methods. The wide range of covered investigation techniques is aimed at developing the critical sense of students in choosing the most appropriate analytical procedure for solving a concrete problem and to be able to determine the structure of an unknown compound by combining several structural analysis methods. c) Attitude - Students should be willing to support scientific values and promote them towards professional or nonprofessional audience. They should be determined to continuously improve their knowledge, acquire new skills and competences. d) Autonomy and responsibility - Besides autonomy in problem solving, the course also encourages teamwork and collaborative attitude among students, with responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
- Course content
- The subject includes ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS), infrared (IR), NMR, circular dichroism (CD), vibrational optical activity (VCD and ROA), as well as organic and biomolecular mass spectrometry laboratory courses. The course also gives an introduction to the stereochemical structure analysis of biomolecules.
- Assessment method
- Grading is based on practical course mark. Students are evaluated based on their group reports about their experiments performed in teams, as well as individual reports on complex spectroscopic analysis of an unknown sample.
