Learning outcomes
a) Knowledge - The course covers the theoretical aspects of some of the most important spectroscopic methods used in the structure investigation of organic compounds and is aimed at developing skills in structure elucidation based on complex spectral evaluation. b) Abilities - Students should be familiar with the physical background of different spectroscopic methods., should be able to critically evaluate the spectroscopic data and recognize the applicability limits of particular spectroscopic methods and empirical rules. By combining information derived from various spectroscopic methods, students should be able to determine the structure of an unknown molecule with the help of handbooks, collections of spectra and tables. c) Attitude - Students should be willing to support scientific values and promote them towards professional or nonprofessional audience. They should be determined to continuously improve their knowledge, acquire new skills and competences. d) Autonomy and responsibility - Independence in solving complex problems and responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
Course content
Topics covered: UV-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, electronic and vibrational circular dichroism (ECD and VCD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry, with special emphasis on their use in the structure investigation of organic compounds. The application of chiroptical spectroscopic methods (ECD, VCD) in the determination of the absolute configuration and conformation of biomolecules is also presented.
Assessment method
Grading is based on colloquium (written exam) during the exam session, K(5). Students are expected to answer selected theoretical questions from the topics of the course and solve a complex spectral evaluation task.
