Learning outcomes: The aim of this course is to introduce basic phonological analysis and survey the major segmental rules of the sound pattern of English.
Course content: The course is a detailed discussion of the principal segmental properties of the sound pattern of English and the phonological rules that are required to handle them. Some dialectal differences will also be discussed (General/Traditional British English, Current British English, Standard American English/General American).
Assessment method: There is a final written examination, which consists of a qualifying section, transcription, fill-in questions and multiple choice items.
