- This course is an introductory one aimed at whetting your appetite for spotting, evaluating and appreciating language change in general and in particular (as applied to English). We will be discussing a number of phonological, syntactic and semantic changes, as well as some aspects of (historical) dialectology.
- Tantárgy tartalma
- What is the purpose of historical linguistics? How is it different to phonology and syntax? An appreciation of what counts as evidence of relatedness between (and among) languages will be discussed. We will see that superficial similarities count for nothing in historical linguistics: Hungarian has one third of its vocabulary from the various Slavonic languages, but it is not a Slavonic language; English may have borrowed thousands of French words, but is still not a dialect is French, etc. In contrast, Russian sounds very different to English, but a historical linguist would still claim that English and Russian are actually 'sister languages' (their common 'mother' having disappeared a very long time ago).
- Számonkérés és értékelés
- The lectures will be based on a reader-friendly Jonathan Culpeper's History of English (2005, 2nd Edition), Routledge. The book is available as a pdf document (downloadable from neptun). This is the course material and the subject matter of the exam at the end of the term. The exam will be a written one including multiple choice questions based on the prescribed book and the lectures. Attendance cannot be checked but is warmly recommended.
