Learning outcomes
The course aims to demonstrate how in depth and informative descriptions of the linguistic phenomena of English can be achieved if such descriptions are based on consistent theoretical assumptions. While teaching the theory is not itself a goal of the course, students will inevitably come to some understanding of the theoretical assumptions and the main claims made about the nature of language from such a standpoint.
Course content
The content of the course will vary from semester to semester depending on the lecturer and how they choose to spread the material out over the 251 and 253 lectures. The material covered by these courses however is fairly uniform and includes: the basic X-bar theoretic analysis of phrases and sentences; the structure of the DP; the structure of the VP and its extensions; the structure of the clause and its extensions; the treatment of aspectual auxiliaries and elements which occupy the ‘middle field’ of the clause such as negatives and adverbs; movement processes involved in English; the use and structure of left peripheral parts of the sentence in presenting discourse aspects of meaning such as asking questions, focusing and topicalising.
Assessment method
The course is assessed by end of semester exam usually consisting of multiple choice questions based on the content of the lectures and the course reading.
