Learning outcomes
This is not a survey course, i.e. it is not designed to give an overview of 20th century British and Irish Poetry. While the list of reading ranges from the very beginning of the century to its very end, and includes poets English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh, the emphasis is not on representativeness but on a thorough examination of specific texts.
Course content
During the term we will have a chance to discuss the following poems: Thomas Hardy (1840–1928): ‘The Darkling Thrush’, ‘The Convergence of the Twain’, ‘He Never Expected Much’ W. B. Yeats (1865–1939): ‘Easter 1916’, ‘Sailing to Byzantium’ T. S. Eliot (1888–1965): ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ Wilfred Owen (1893–1918): ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’, ‘Futility’, Isaac Rosenberg (1890–1918): ‘Break of Day in the Trenches’ Stevie Smith (1902–1971): ‘Thoughts about the Person from Porlock’ (Amy Clampitt, ‘A Cure at Porlock’, R. S. Thomas: ‘A Person from Porlock’), ‘Sunt Leones’ + Coleridge’s ‘Kubla Khan’ and its preface W. H. Auden (1907–1973): ‘Musée des Beaux Arts’, ‘In Memory of W. B. Yeats’ R. S. Thomas (1913–2000): ‘Here’, ‘Evans’, ‘Welsh Landscape’, ‘A Welsh Testament’ Philip Larkin (1922–1985): ‘Church Going’, ‘Sad Steps’ Tony Harrison (1937–): V Seamus Heaney (1939–2013): ‘The Harvest Bow’, ‘North’ + DEADLINE FOR HOME PAPERS Carol Ann Duffy (1955–): ‘Standing Female Nude, ‘Anne Hatheway’, ‘Little Red-Cap’
Assessment method
Grading is based on the following: participation in in-class discussion (includes reading poems carefully and looking up unknown words), a short presentation on one of the topics, and an essay of 4–5 pages (an analysis of one (possibly more) of the poems).
