Oktatás célja
The aim of this course is to provide a comprehensive reading experience of Thomas Gray’s English-language poetry and place it into the immediate context of Restoration literature and sentimental aesthetics, as well as the broader context of English literature through the 17th and 19th/20th centuries. In doing so, the intensive experience of close reading will be complemented with a more extensive encounter with different eras and genres of literatures in English, but the primary focus will also remain Gray’s oeuvre.
Tantárgy tartalma
We will read an extensive selection of Thomas Gray’s poetry as well as a range of related literary and critical texts to gain an insight into the web of Neo-Classical, sentimental, and other compositions. On a meta-academic level, we shall gain some insight into the workings of scientific databases and research pools.
Számonkérés és értékelés
Weekly readings; metrical analysis; presentation of a topic; in-class test; end-term essay feedback.
