Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the theory of cultural memory and to familiarize them with the cultural aspects of early modern England – with a particular focus on the Tudor period (1485–1603) – through the reading and analysis of contemporary textual and visual records, as well as secondary literature.
Course content
The course is concerned with the formation and transformation of the cultural memory of early modern England, focusing on how historical events, figures, and practices from the Tudor (1485–1603) and Stuart (1603–1714) periods are remembered and represented. Through analysis of primary and secondary sources, students will examine the role of literature, art, politics, religion, and social dynamics in shaping cultural memory.
Assessment method
In addition to regular class attendance and active participation, a 15-minute PPT presentation and 2 tests (one mid-term and one end-of-semester comprehensive test). In case of 4 absences, an essay on a topic of the teacher and student’s choice is required, with the prior permission of the teacher. No grade will be awarded for more than 4 absences.
