- The aim of this course is to introduce students to the work of the major British artists of the nineteenth century. The course will help students to learn the characteristics of the stylistic trends of the period and to be able to analyse works of art independently, which will be useful for their future studies as well. This will be achieved through the study of the artworks of the period and the analysis of literature written about them.
- Course content
- The first session will consist of a brief overview to familiarise students with the characteristics of British art before the nineteenth century. Then, week by week, we will be introduced to new works (mainly paintings) and through them to different trends and cultural concepts such as Orientalism, Realism and Pre-Raphaelitism. Although the course will focus on art, the cultural and literary history of the period will also be discussed, to give students a comprehensive knowledge of the sister arts of the nineteenth century.
- Assessment method
- At the end of the semester, students receive a practical grade. The grade will be based on classroom activity, homework assignments, and the preparation and delivery of a presentation. It will also be possible to complete extra assignments, the procedure for which will be discussed in more detail in the introductory class.
