Learning outcomes
This course is designed to serve three major purposes. First, it aims to allow students to discover, for themselves, the pleasures of reading Joyce, whose texts are as rewarding as they can be challenging. Second, it is meant to offer an overview of Joyce’s output from the beginnings through the crowning achievement of his lifework. Finally, the course invites students to acquaint themselves with some representative works of the huge output created by generations of Joycean scholars.
Course content
Selections read and discussed from the volumes Chamber Music, Pomes Penyeach (sic) and Dubliners as well as the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses with episodes screened from the major film-adaptations of some of these works. Chapters assigned (mainly for presenters) from representative works of relevant secondary sources (e.g., Kenner and Burgess) to some leading contemporary critics (e.g., Kiberd, Norris, Gibson).
Assessment method
End-of-term practical mark (gyakorlati jegy) based on tasks, assignments and tests as announced by the instructor (presentations, in-class and take-home essays and quizzes, etc.).
Bibliography
Compulsory Six to eight poems from Chamber Music and Pomes Penyeach (sic), four or five short stories from Dubliners, the whole of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and four episodes from Ulysses specified by the instructor in the first class. Recommended (Appropriate chapters from the works listed below, especially for the presenters.) Fargnoli, A. Nicholas and Michael Patrick Gillespie (2002). James Joyce A to Z. Gifford, Don. (1988). Joyce Annotated. Gifford, Don. (1982). Ulysses Annotated.
