- A kurzus célja, hogy a hallgatókat közelebbről megismertesse a késő-viktoriánus kor “kulturális villámhárítójával” és önjelölt zsenijével, Oscar Wilde-dal és irodalmi kontextusával. A kurzus elsősorban nem életrajzi vagy pszichoanalitikus olvasatokra hívja fel a figyelmet, inkább a szorosolvasatra sarkallja a hallgatókat. Az órán kibontakozó értelmezést később a korszak kulturális kontextusához viszonyítjuk. Az elemzés olyan szövegbéli bizonyítékokra koncentrál, melyek kiválthatták a korabeli olvasói válaszokat és kritikákat. Még nagyobb hangsúlyt kap a korabeli nem-kanonikus és “apokrif” szövegek olvasása Wilde irodalmi kultúrájának, hagyatékának és a legenda kialakulásának jobb megértése érdekében.
- Course content
- The seminar includes various genres: selected poems by Oscar Wilde, Robert Browning and William Wordsworth; considerable attention will be paid to Wilde’s “only novel”, The Picture of Dorian Gray and excerpts from non-canonised fiction related to Wilde appropriate for discussion; two plays (Salome, The Importance of Being Earnest); Aubrey Beardsley’s illustrations to Salome; “The True Story of a Vampire”, a short story by Eric Stenbock. Therefore, students will read, stage, and examine fiction, plays, and illustrations.
- Assessment method
- Students are required to actively contribute to the discussion during sessions. Occasional pop-quizzes checking students’ close familiarity with the texts can be expected. On the last occasion, students write a quick few-item in-class test, which gives one component of their preliminary exam mark. The last component of the preliminary exam mark is a 6-8 page home-essay presenting the results of the student’s individual mini research on a topic of their choice (but related to Wilde and his context). In case the student declines the preliminary exam mark, they need to take an exam viva voce.
