Tantárgy tartalma
This course invites students to the "golden twenties" and the "dirty thirties". During the semester, we will read and interpret works of fiction that had a significant influence on the literary taste of the period and that provide insight into the culture of these two decades, both internationally and in Hungary. On the one hand, we will take a selection from the world literature of the period and, on the other, we will explore the perceptions, themes and literary devices of the period through English translations of Hungarian-language fiction. Issues concerning the way humans function, the confrontation with crisis of the self and modern technicised society, the portrayal of the successful, the lost and the fallen, the threat of war and the desire for peace or love and lust are just some of the possible issues addressed.
Számonkérés és értékelés
Book Reviews (To be submitted via CANVAS). For each of the works discussed, students are required to upload a minimum of 250 words and a maximum of 500 words by 10 a.m. the day before the synchronous class. These short pieces of writing will prepare the class discussion and allow students to brainstorm about the work. Clarity and relative coherence are important. Writing is graded on a scale of 1 to 10. Without submitting them, the course cannot be completed. Class attendance, engaged participation in discussions. The backbone of the class will be plenary discussion and collective analysis. Class work will be taken into account in the end-of-semester evaluation.  Classes require reading of the assigned literature, as evidenced in dialogues with the instructor and peers. Active participation in text analysis classes will be required and will be a major factor in determining the grade. No comments will negatively affect the end-of-semester grade, but I will try to give priority to comments that are relevant. More than three absences will result in failure of the course.
