Oktatás célja
This course explores the representation of gender in popular television series. It provides an in-depth analysis of the ways in which gender is portrayed, constructed, and challenged on and through television. It examines the cultural, historical, and political contexts that shape the representation of gender, and analyzes the ways in which these representations impact the broader cultural discourse.

Week 1: Introduction to the Course Week 2: Analyzing Sex and Gender Introducing Sex, Gender, Representation, Agency, Discourse, and Power Concepts Week 3: Body and Femininity Representations Exploring body stereotypes and counter portrayals in TV shows such as Gossip Girl, Sex and the City, Big Little Lies, Euphoria, etc. Week 4: Patriarchy, Power, and Masculinity Representations Examining patriarchal masculinity and toxic masculinity discourses in TV shows like The Sopranos, Mad Men, The Deuce, Queer Eye, etc. Week 5: Heteronormative, Homonormative, and Queer Family Representations Analyzing depictions of heteronormative motherhood, homonormative parenthood, and queer families in TV shows like Working Moms, Modern Family, Raised by Wolves, Battlestar Galactica, Tales of the City, The Fosters, etc. Week 6: Feminism, Agency, and Intersectionality Exploring feminism portrayals and intersectional depictions in TV shows like Mrs. America, When We Rise, Good Girls Revolt, Bomb Girls, Orange is the New Black, Dear White People, etc. Week 7: No class (Easter) Week 8: Posthumanism and Futuristic Gender Representations Examining posthuman and superhuman bodies, gendered/genderless futures, and disability in TV shows like Westworld, Star Trek Discovery, Altered Carbon, Humans, See, etc. Week 9: Workshop Week 10: No class (May 1) Week 11: Final Projects Presentations Week 12: Final Projects Presentations Week 13: Final Projects Presentations

Attendance and participation 25% Students are allowed to have 3 unexcused absences. Participation means be present, bring examples, ask questions, interact with classmates, comment on their work, provide constructive criticism, help improve each other. Assignments and presentation 50% - 1 workshop (in-class): 25% - 1 presentation (10min, in-class) 25% Final project 25% Every student will develop a final project studying some element(s), aspect(s), theme(s), or object(s) of a particular television show. They will be expected to use the theoretical texts we covered but not limited to.
