Oktatás célja
This core graduate course is an advanced survey of American literature, the several traditions, movements, schools, and trends that make up its diverse canons. It builds on a basic knowledge accumulated in American literature survey courses at the BA level and through your own readings. Here we will understand American literature in its interconnectedness: the various canons, trends, and schools. In addition, we will practice various scholarly skills over the course, among them, skills in critical reading, critical and scholarly writing, and oral exam.
Tantárgy tartalma
We will explore the internal dynamics of canon formation: the ways authors tackled the social issues and artistic demands of their times and often came up with similar or at least comparable solutions—in other words, how they created literary movements, schools, and traditions.
Számonkérés és értékelés
In addition to evaluating how students have acquired knowledges produced in the assigned texts, critical reading and comprehension skills, critical writing skills, academic writing skills, and oral presentation skills will also be assessed (on the basis of class participation, submitted written homework, and the final oral exam).
