Lecturer: Sara Hungler, PhD habil, Labour and Social Law Department (hungler@ajk.elte.hu) The founding Treaties pursued a dual aim of ’economic and Social integration', usually analysed from the perspective of the Member States and the European institutions and their bargaining. However, social integration in the European Union is a societal phenomenon requiring analysis beyond legal science. This course aims to combine law, economics and social studies to understand the complexity of the social face of the European Union. This course will provide a general introduction to EU constitutionalism, Member States' interests, the role of fundamental rights, and an overview of related secondary law and the European Court of Justice case law. The course is designed to involve students in the discussions, meaning you will be required to do the readings in advance. Please consider how much time you could devote to preparation every week. The exam will be unusual for a course in legal studies: creating a poster. Students will have to take a photo that symbolises social integration in the EU and write a one-page description of why they chose this picture and what integration achievements or (legislative) hiatus characterise the chosen field. Students will present their posters during class. The best 20 posters will be combined into a brochure.
