The course is taught by experts who have entensive theoretical and practical knowledge in various fields of human rights protections. Each lectures will cover a particular field, wich raises relevant and timely questions in the practice of universal or regional protection of human rights within international organizations. Schedule 1.Climate and environmental litigation in the practice of the ECtHR 2. Mitigating the negative impacts of privatisation on the realisation of economic, social and cultural rights. Global advocacy efforts 3.Strengthening public services for the realisation of economic, social and cultural rights and tackling the effects of climate change. 4.The European Social Charter: ways and means of the interpretation of social rights by the European Committee of Social Rights, state reports and collective complaints, supervision and its consequences 5.The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages: European cultural heritage and different levels of protection, supervisory mechanism based on state reports and its recent reform 6. The Role of UNHCR in a refugee crisis 7.International Child Protection and UNICEF 8.From the historical legacy of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights until the comprehensive assessment of the United Nations Human Rights Council 9.The internal and external human rights diplomacy of the European Union 10.The human rights diplomacy of Latin American and Caribbean states in light of the challenges of transitional justice: Coping with the shadows of the past, extreme social differences, and poverty. The human rights diplomacy of Asia-Pacific states in light of the “Asian values debate” and regional human rights initiatives 11.Implementing universal human rights standards in and by sub-Saharan African states in the shade of local traditions. Assessment/Exam Students will be expected to write individually a course paper in relation to one of the topics discussed during the term.
