- Aim of the course: This course explores the psychological mechanisms underlying behavioral addictions, with a particular focus on fandom. Students will critically engage with theoretical models, empirical research, and real-world implications of excessive engagement in non-substance-related activities. Topics include social media addiction, gaming disorder, compulsive buying, fan-based attachments, sexual addiction, and exercise addiction. The course also examines behavioral addictions within the context of other mental health disorders. By the end of the course, students will develop a nuanced understanding of the fine line between passionate interest and maladaptive behavior. Learning outcome, competences knowledge: Understands key theoretical frameworks and empirical research on behavioral addictions. Recognizes the similarities and differences between behavioral and substance-related addictions. Understands the impact of behavioral addictions on individuals and society. Is familiar with the psychological aspects of fandom and parasocial relationships. attitude: Approaches behavioral addictions with a critical, evidence-based perspective. skills: Critically evaluates academic literature and synthesizes research findings. Applies the terminology of addiction studies in professional discourse. Identifies and differentiates symptoms of various behavioral addictions. Designs and evaluates interventions for problematic behaviors. Uses research-based evidence to analyze real-world cases. responsibility/ autonomy: Demonstrates the ability to work autonomously and in group settings. Engages in self-reflection regarding personal biases and preconceptions about addiction.

- Learning requirements, mode of evaluation and criteria of evaluation: Class Participation & Discussions (20%) Biweekly assignments (30%) Final project, study presentation (50%) Mode of evaluation: 5 point grading scale Criteria of evaluation: Students are allowed a maximum of three absences during the semester. Additional absences must be justified and require instructor approval.
