- Course content
- The aim of the course is to present an integrated knowledge of the higher-level concepts and contexts of prokaryotic taxonomy. Main topics of the course: The importance and development of systematics from Linnaeus to the present day. Prokaryotic species definitions (including “Candidatus”), basics of polyphasic taxonomy. Phenotypic characterization of prokaryotes, applicability of phenotypic keys. Genetic traits, role of 16S rRNA gene in prokaryotic taxonomy, whole genome analyses, metagenomics in prokaryotic taxonomy. Semantophore molecules and phylogenetics. Microbiological databases and their use. Horizontal gene transfer in evolution. Network evolution and range of species issues. Practical taxonomic knowledge.
- Assessment method
- k5 = exam mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) The colloquium for the examination period must be prepared from the material of the lectures and the given literature, followed by an oral examination. In addition, a short lecture on the topic published in connection with practical species knowledge must be given during the semester, and its evaluation will be included in the semester mark.
