Learning outcomes
Competencies: Knowledge: Has a high level of knowledge related biochemistry and molecular biology, and can organize and synthesize this knowledge. Familiar with the laboratory practical tools and methods used in modern biochemistry and molecular biology. Ability: Can recognize and integrate relationships between the knowledge of different molecular biology areas. Able to play a significant role in scientific research and reach new scientific results under competent leadership. Able to express himself/herself professionally in the field of molecular biology both orally and in writing. Attitude: Seeks to learn about the relationship between nature and molecular systems of life, the molecular level working and evolution of living systems. Committed and open to the scientific knowledge with an integrative attitude. Autonomy and Responsibility: Able to independently analyze and evaluate fundamental professional issues and to report and make meaningful discussion about them. Feels the responsibility to explain research discoveries in molecular biology and of protein machines for the general public Feels the responsibility for attidude formation about molecular sciences in the public.
Course content
The aim of the course is to give deeper and interactive knowledge in the major research areas of this field based on the principles and fundamentals of biochemistry and molecular biology, deeper and interactive knowledge in the major research areas of this field. Main topics of the course: Folding, stability, and dynamics of protein structure. Regulatory principles and mechanism of protein molecules. New results and concepts understanding regulation of gene expression. Catalytic mechanisms of enzymes: principles and examples. Mechanisms and regulation of various molecular motors. Basic knowledge of glycobiology. Biochemical pharmacology for molecular biologists. Molecular basis of cellular signalling processes; signal transduction systems. Regulation of cell cycle and molecular mechanisms of apoptosis.
Assessment method
k5 = exam mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) Evaluation is based on the knowledge of student in written and oral exams. During the classes answering thought-provoking questions from the instructor or asking similar question by the students, as well as submitting homework assignments are awarded by extra points in the written exam. The written exam consists of various test questions. Based the written exam, mark 3 as the best one can be obtained. For better evaluation, during oral exams two topics are discussed in detail; integrating knowledge of the students is the most important factor to consider for grading.
