Competencies: Knowledge: Understands the advanced features of infectional immunology. Understands and applies the terminology required for understanding the infectional immunology. Understands the molecular processes and regulations of infectional immunology. Understands the importance of interdisciplinarity. Understands the relationships of the different disciplinal knowledge. Ability: Able to recognize and coherently interpret the features of infectional immunology on advanced level. Able to apply the advanced terminology of infectional immunology. Able to present her/his results on advanced level both in oral and written form. Able to recognize and integrate the interrelation of the different scientific disciplines. Able to organize data and knowledge based from scientific aspect, able to analyze and interpret. Able to apply the knowledge gained in the advanced scientific interpretation of the phenomenon of infectional immunology. Attitude: Claims to be able to use the knowledge gained in an integrative interpretation of the functioning of living systems. Open to follow the new biological and other scientific results. Rule and observe the rules of scientific ethics. Communicate the results of the disciplines. Course content
The aim of the course is to introduce and discuss the advanced topics of the infectional immunology. Main topics of the course: Innate immune mechanisms against pathogens; Adaptive mechanisms against pathogens; Immune response against extracellular bacteria; Intracellular bacterial infections; Immune mechanisms against unicellular parasites; Immune mechanisms against multicellular parasites; Immune response against pathogenic fungi; Influenza - infections caused by the bird flu virus; HIV and AIDS; Development and maintenance of immunological memory; Infections caused by sexually transmitted pathogens; Vaccination; Immune escape mechanisms of pathogens
Assessment method
k5 = exam mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) Preparation for the exam from the class material and the given textbooks. The evaluation is based on an assessment of students’ knowledge based on individual performance. The oral exam is based on the topics of the lecture.
