Learning outcomes

The lectures present the neurobiological background of cognitive processes.

Course content

The most important topics of the course: layers and cell types of the cerebral cortex, the basics of EEG, fMRI and fNIRS, recent methodological developments and challenges in comparative brain imaging of primate and nonprimate mammals, hierarchical processing in the visual and auditory modalities -- the cases of object  recognition and speech processing, brain specializations for social stimulus processing, evidence-based medicine, genes and epigenetic changes-inducing early childhood environments as a determinant of vulnerability; stress as an activating factor, how different is the vision of the experimental animals, hearing and balance, plasticity of the brain, the role of microbiom and vagus in the development of neurological diseases, role of peripheral vs. central nervous system in pain; the social brain, learning and memory.

Assessment method

k5 = exam mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) Grade is determined by end-of semester oral exam (graded on a scale from 1 to 5)
