- Competencies: Knowledge: Understands the basic ecological characteristics of natural communities. Knows the basic concepts of conservation biology, is aware of its terminology, applies them correctly. Understands that conservation biology provides the scientific bases of biodiversity conservation. Ability: Able to apply the acquired knowledge to explain everyday phenomena. Has the ability to reason based on sciences Attitude: Requires integrating the acquired information in his/her biological knowledge. Committed and open to science-based knowledge and an integrative approach. Committed to acquiring new competencies and expanding his/her worldview. Autonomy and Responsibility: Able to think about basic ecological issues on his/her own and can report on them. Able to independently review the literature on a given topic, to organize and present the collected information. Feels responsible for acquiring scientifically based knowledge.
- Course content
- Need for scientific bases in conservation, the science of conservation biology. The concept of biodiversity, its hierarchical nature, methods of measuring, the need for biodiversity indicators. Threats to biological diversity: loss, fragmentation, and degradation of habitats, effects of global climate change. overexploitation, non-indigenous species. Theoretical and practical bases of conservation of populations. Theory and practice of establishing protected areas. Theoretical and practical bases of managing protected areas. The need for and importance of restoring habitats.
- Assessment method
- k5 = exam mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) During the term students produce an essay based on their own literature survey of a selected topic. The mark at the end of the term is based on the essay and the oral exam during the exam period.
