- Course content
- The aim of the course is to teach deep knowledge in wide areas of molecular biology, bioenergetics of structure-function relationships of protein machines. Main topics of the course: Thermodynamics and bioenergetics of living systems. Molecular machines. Interactions between energy and equilibrium of open systems. Exploring and understanding molecular mechanisms through protein structure. Mechanism and structure-function relationship of ATP synthase motor protein. Mechanism of chemiosmosis: energy transduction and conservation in proton gradient. Oxidation and light driven electron transport chains, symmetry of the oxidation of hydrogen and water. Energy transducing molecular machines of replication, transcription and translation: Structure-function relationship and bioenergetics of the replisome, the transcriptional apparatus and the ribosome.
- Assessment method
- k5 = exam mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) Evaluation is based on the knowledge of student in oral exams. During the exam basic terms and concepts are asked to explain, moreover slides are shown to students to explain molecular biology processes, structure-function relationships of the visualized proteins and their complexes including the methodological background. Oral exams are in groups of students in several rounds of questioning until the professor (based on detailed scoring) is able to decide the final grade.
