Course content
The aim of the course is to present in detail the classical and molecular methods to study microorganisms. In addition, we discuss the interactions of microorganisms with different organisms, the microbiological aspects of aquatic environments and soils, and the basics of bioremediation. Main topics of the course: Environmental and diagnostic microbiological sampling principles and techniques, strategies in diagnostic microbiology. Classic and new cultivation methods. The use of the molecular microbiology toolkits to explore microbial diversity. Modern light and electron microscopic techniques. Principles of interactions between populations (plant-microbe, animal-microbe, human-microbe interactions). Microbiology of aquatic environments, biological water qualification. Soil microbiology, possibilities of bioremediation. Microbiology of anaerobic environments. Pathogenicity and virulence.
Assessment method
k5 = exam mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) Preparation for the exam from the class material and the given textbooks. Students should be prepared from the material of the lectures and the given literature. This is followed by an oral or written exam.
